Today I came across an interesting article Google Artificial Intelligence to Predict Heart Disease. I read that and was intrigued. Google is applying its AI to be able to predict how likely it is for a patient to have a heart attack or a stroke. That's pretty awesome in my opinion. The Google AI bots will be able to make these predictions by examining the patients retina. Below is a diagram that shows where in the eye the retina is.
Looking at the diagram above you would think that the Google AI inspection would be very invasive, but it is not. It's non invasive and very accurate. Not only can the Google AI predict heart disease it can also predict; age, blood pressure and if a person smokes. I think that is just amazing. According to fox news, "Google used models based on data from 284,335 patients. It was also able to deduce a persons age, blood pressure, and whether they smoke. The findings were published in the in Nature Biomedical Engineering, an online medical journal, says that such a method is as accurate as predicting cardiovascular disease through more invasive measures that involve sticking a needle in a patient's arm."
This advacemwnt is still in developing stages. According to Lily Peng, "“The caveat to this is that it’s early, (and) we trained this on a small data set,” says Google’s Lily Peng, a doctor and lead researcher on the project. “We think that the accuracy of this prediction will go up a little bit more as we kind of get more comprehensive data. Discovering that we could do this is a good first step. But we need to validate.”" Peng hopes future scientist will continue to research this and build on top of what is already known.
